Hair Transplantation

Hair transplantation involves extracting individual hair follicles or small groups of follicles from the donor site, which is usually the back or sides of the scalp where hair is more resistant to falling out. These follicles are then carefully implanted into small incisions created in the recipient site. There are two main techniques for hair transplantation:

• Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): This involves removing a strip of skin bearing hair follicles from the donor site, which is then dissected under a microscope to separate individual follicles or small groups before transplantation. This procedure leaves a small linear scar in the donor area.
• Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): This involves extracting individual hair follicles directly from the donor site using a small punch tool. This procedure does not leave a linear scar but may leave small, scattered dot-like scars in the donor area. After transplantation, the transplanted follicles begin to grow naturally over several months. Hair transplantation is considered a permanent solution for hair loss and baldness and can significantly improve a person's appearance and self-confidence.

• Symptoms that may warrant hair transplantation:
  • Gradual or sudden hair thinning.
  • Receding hairline.
  • Thinning hair on the crown or other parts of the scalp.
  • Hair loss due to burns, injuries, or previous surgeries.
  • Thinning or loss of eyebrow or eyelash hair.
• Causes and conditions treatable with hair transplantation:
  • Androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness): The most common cause of hair loss.
  • Hair loss due to injuries or burns: Hair can be transplanted into scar tissue to improve appearance.
  • Hair loss resulting from cosmetic surgeries: Such as facelifts.
  • Traction alopecia: Hair loss caused by excessively tight hairstyles.
  • Thinning or loss of eyebrow and eyelash hair: Can be transplanted for cosmetic reasons or after injuries.

• Diagnosis:
  • Clinical evaluation: The doctor will examine the scalp and assess the pattern of hair loss and identify suitable donor areas.
  • Medical history: Discussing the patient's medical history and any medical conditions or medications that may affect hair loss or the transplantation procedure.
  • Hair analysis: In some cases, hair analysis may be performed to examine hair follicles and determine the cause of hair loss.
  • Transplantation planning: Determining the number of follicles needed and the areas to be transplanted.
• Treatment Stages:
  • Consultation and planning: Discussing goals, expectations, choosing the appropriate technique (FUT or FUE), and developing a transplantation plan.
  • Anesthesia: The scalp is locally anesthetized to numb the donor and recipient areas.
  • Extraction (in FUT): Removing a strip of skin from the donor area and suturing the wound.
  • Extraction (in FUE): Extracting individual hair follicles using a small punch tool.
  • Follicle preparation: The skin strip (in FUT) is dissected or the extracted follicles (in FUE) are prepared under a microscope.
  • Incision creation: Small incisions are created in the recipient area where the follicles will be implanted.
  • Implantation: The follicles are carefully inserted into the prepared incisions.
  • Post-operative care: Includes instructions on how to care for the scalp, taking prescribed medications (such as antibiotics and pain relievers), and avoiding strenuous activities.
  • Follow-up: Regular follow-up visits to monitor healing and new hair growth.
